How often should windows be cleaned? Homes, offices and shop windows

By TF Clean 4 min read

How often windows need cleaning depends on their location, the type of glazing and how the rooms are used. Windows facing a busy road get dirty faster than those overlooking a garden. For commercial shopfront cleaning and glass facades, a streak-free impression is especially important. Taking these differences into account makes it easier to set a sensible window and glass cleaning schedule rather than waiting until the panes turn grey.

What the right cleaning interval depends on

Location matters most. Road traffic, soot, nearby building sites, trees, spring pollen and exposure to wind and driving rain determine how quickly a film settles on the glass. Windows protected by a roof overhang often stay clean longer than exposed panes, roof windows or a conservatory glass roof.

How the rooms are used matters just as much. In the kitchen a fine grease film builds up on the inside; pets and children leave marks at hand and nose height. For offices, medical practices and retail shops, how visitors and customers see the glazing counts as well.

  • Road traffic, building work or garden outside the window
  • Trees, pollen, bird droppings and weather exposure
  • Kitchen grease film, pets, children or smokers in the room
  • Customer visibility on shopfronts and glass entrance doors

Flats, houses and conservatories: a practical guide

Many private households have their windows cleaned two to four times a year, often as part of a spring clean, in summer and before winter. After winter, soot and weather marks show on the glass, followed by yellow pollen in April and May. Homes on busy roads or with large floor-to-ceiling windows and conservatories often benefit from shorter intervals.

It makes sense to schedule glass cleaning, frame cleaning, rebates and sills together. Clean panes in dirty uPVC or wooden frames do not look cared-for for long, and the next rain shower washes grime from the frame straight back onto the glass.

Commercial premises: offices, practices and shopfront cleaning

For commercial properties a fixed cycle pays off. Passers-by and customers see shop windows and glass entrance doors up close, so shopfront cleaning usually takes place weekly, fortnightly or monthly depending on the street. Glass partitions and entrance doors with frequent fingerprints are often wiped down in between during regular maintenance cleaning.

Upper-floor office windows usually manage with a quarterly or six-monthly schedule. Combining glass cleaning and regular office cleaning in one schedule saves duplicate coordination.

Signs that the next window clean is due

Low-angle sunlight is a simple test: streaks, limescale spots and a grey haze on the pane show up immediately against the light. Dried rain spots, insect marks or cobwebs in the reveals also indicate that the last clean was some time ago.

Check the window rebates, rubber seals and drainage slots in the bottom frame at the same time. If leaves and street grit collect there, rainwater cannot drain properly. Wiping frames and rebates at each thorough clean keeps seals and hardware in good condition longer.

Requesting regular window cleaning in Riesa and surroundings

A few details are enough for a clear quote: the number of window casements and glass doors, approximate size, whether both inside and outside should be cleaned, and how accessible the glazing is. Mention conservatories, glass roofs, fanlights, roof windows or multi-pane period windows briefly. Two or three photos help with a remote assessment.

Agree in advance whether frame cleaning, rebates, shutters or blinds and sills are included and at what interval visits should take place. We carry out domestic and commercial window and shopfront cleaning in Riesa and the surrounding area – as a one-off job or on a regular schedule.

  • Number and type of windows, glass doors or shopfront panes
