Wall preparation
Filling: how smooth should the wall be?
Smooth is not always smooth. What one person considers perfect is still too uneven for another, especially with large windows and light from the side. A small sample area brings clarity before the main work begins.
How smooth is smooth?
There are four quality levels for filled surfaces, Q1 to Q4. For a normal wall with woodchip or textured wallpaper, Q2 is enough. For smooth, matt paint, Q3 is usual. With Q4 the whole surface is skimmed to meet particularly high requirements. Even with Q4, unevenness may still be visible under raking light.
Each level means more working steps and therefore more time. That is why it pays to choose the right level deliberately rather than simply ordering “as smooth as possible”.
Creating a sample area
A sample area of about one square metre shows what the agreed level looks like on your wall. Ideally it is in a spot with typical light, for example next to the window.
Pictures from the internet help describe what you want. But how a surface looks on your wall and in your light only becomes clear with the sample.
Judging it properly
The area is assessed after priming or the first coat of paint, because the final effect is hard to judge on an unprimed filled surface. It is viewed in the light that normally fills the room.
Once the sample area is approved, it serves as the shared standard for the whole wall and later for the sign-off.
- Q2: standard for woodchip and textured wallpaper
- Q3: smooth wall for matt paint
- Q4: full skim for particularly high surface requirements
