Wallpapering
How many rolls of wallpaper do I need?
Too little wallpaper is more annoying than too much: the roll you buy later often comes from a different batch and differs in shade. With a simple calculation per room, you arrive at a realistic quantity.
Calculating the wall area
The calculation is based not on the floor area of the flat but on the walls: room perimeter times room height. Large windows and doors are deducted, small openings are best left in, as they create waste anyway.
Work out each room separately and note alcoves, reveals and sloping ceilings too. They are often forgotten in a rough calculation.
From area to number of rolls
A standard roll is 10.05 metres long and 53 centimetres wide, a little over 5 square metres. There are also double-width non-woven wallpapers, though; the details on the label are what count.
Counting lengths is more practical than a pure area calculation: how many room-height lengths does one roll give, and how many lengths do the walls need? With patterned wallpaper, the cut length has to be matched to the repeat and match type. This creates extra waste.
- Room perimeter times height
- Deduct large windows and doors
- Work out lengths per roll
- Allow for repeat and match type when cutting
Allowing a reserve
Also allow a reserve for miscuts and later touch-ups. Waste already included in counting lengths does not need to be added again.
Make sure all rolls have the same batch number, and keep an opened roll for later touch-ups.
