Professional carpet cleaning: process, drying time and preparation

By TF Clean 4 min read

Fitted carpet often still looks tidy on the surface even though fine dust, grit, allergens and house dust mites have built up deep in the pile. Once high-traffic walkways turn grey, pet or smoke odours linger, or a change of tenancy approaches, deep carpet cleaning pays off. For the appointment to run smoothly, square meterage, fibre type, furniture and drying time should be clarified in advance.

When deep carpet cleaning is worthwhile

Typical reasons are visibly darker traffic lanes in front of doors, corridors and desks, stubborn drink stains, musty odours and the handover of a rented flat or commercial unit. Deep cleaning is also advisable after renovation work when fine plaster and building dust has settled into the carpet pile.

An ordinary vacuum cleaner mainly removes loose surface dirt. Trodden-in grit, skin flakes and mite allergens sit deep near the backing and require wet or low-moisture methods such as spray extraction (hot-water extraction), rotary shampooing or bonnet pad cleaning for moisture-sensitive commercial carpets.

Process: vacuuming, spot pre-treatment and spray extraction

First the carpet is vacuumed thoroughly with a brush vacuum to lift loose grit and dust from the pile. Next comes targeted spot pre-treatment on coffee rings, grease marks and dark walkways. Depending on the backing and fibre, the carpet is then deep-rinsed using spray extraction – spraying cleaning solution into the fibres under pressure and immediately extracting the dissolved dirt – or cleaned gently with a rotary machine and microfibre pad. Finally the pile is groomed so it dries evenly.

Before starting, we explain clearly which stains can be lifted and where material limits lie. Old discolouration, bleach marks or rings already set by unsuitable home remedies cannot always be removed completely – an honest assessment beforehand avoids surprises afterwards.

Drying time after carpet cleaning

After deep wet cleaning by spray extraction, fitted carpet usually needs several hours to a day before it is completely dry and ready for full foot traffic, depending on pile depth and room climate. Good cross-ventilation and normal room heating speed up drying considerably.

Build the drying phase into your schedule: in offices, law firms and medical practices, Friday afternoon or the weekend works well; in homes, choose a day with minimal foot traffic. Furniture should only be placed back on completely dry carpet to avoid rust marks from metal feet or permanent indentations in damp pile.

Preparing the room for carpet cleaning

The clearer the floor area, the more uniform the cleaning result. Chairs, pedestals, floor vases, cables and loose items should be cleared beforehand. For heavy wardrobes or sofas, we agree in advance whether we clean around them or which pieces will be moved.

Easy access to a water tap (fresh and waste water) and power sockets for the extraction machines makes the job smoother. For offices or vacant rental flats, key handover, floor level and a contact person belong in the brief coordination.

  • Clear chairs, small furniture, plants and loose cables from the carpet
  • Agree in advance whether heavy furniture stays in place or is moved
  • Ensure access to a water tap and 230 V power sockets
  • Allow sufficient drying time and ventilation
  • Coordinate access, floor level, keys and a contact person
