Post-renovation cleaning
Cleaning after renovation: dust, paint residue and handover
After renovation, refurbishment or building work, fine sanding and construction dust, protective films and material residues remain everywhere – on windowsills, inside radiators, on glazing and in floor joints. A systematic builders clean (split into a rough initial clean and a fine final clean) leaves flats, houses and commercial premises ready for occupation or handover.
Timing: schedule the final builders clean after all trades finish
Schedule the fine final clean (post-construction clean) only once all dusty trades such as drywalling, filling, sanding, drilling and tile cutting have finished. Wall paint, filler, silicone joints and wallpaper paste must be completely dry.
Lift protective sheeting, decorator’s fleece and masking tape carefully by folding the edges inwards towards the middle of the room. That traps coarse sanding dust inside the fleece instead of scattering it back into the air.
Rough builders clean: removing packaging, debris and construction dust
During the rough clean, cardboard, plastic sheeting, wallpaper offcuts, masking tape and leftover trade materials are cleared first. Paint tins, primers, solvents and sealant cartridges do not belong in household bins; they are disposed of separately through the local recycling centre or licensed waste carrier.
Fine plaster, filler and drilling dust clogs ordinary domestic vacuum filters within minutes and can burn out the motor. For dry dedusting, a commercial construction vacuum with a fine-dust filter is used instead. Work strictly from top to bottom: ceiling edges, door frames, windowsills, radiator fins and finally the floor.
- Roll protective fleece and sheeting inwards to trap dust
- Dispose of packaging, offcuts and paint residues separately
- Use an industrial construction vacuum with a fine-dust filter
- Always vacuum dry dust from top to bottom
Fine builders clean: paint splashes, cement haze and protective films
Next comes the detailed surface-by-surface fine clean: doors, frames, skirting boards, light switches, sockets, sanitaryware and windows including frames and rebates are wiped damp. Protective films and manufacturer labels on new windows or taps are peeled off without leaving adhesive residue. Wash water must be changed frequently so no chalky plaster or limescale haze stays behind on floors and tiles.
Fresh splashes of water-based emulsion paint or wallpaper paste dissolve with warm water. For dried paint, plaster or mortar spots and cement haze on newly laid tiles, soak first and use material-safe removers rather than scraping dry. Dry blades or abrasive pads must never be used on window glass, uPVC frames, chrome taps or vinyl flooring.
Daylight inspection before moving in or property handover
Once all surfaces have dried, inspect every room in daylight and low-angle light. Only after the water has evaporated completely can you see whether a fine grey veil of sanding dust still sits on dark tiles, vinyl floors or window panes.
Before a tenancy handover, building sign-off or shop opening, check the kitchen, bathrooms, window rebates, tops of door frames and skirting boards once more in detail.
- Window panes, frames, rebates and any remaining protective film
- Radiator fins, top edges of door frames, switches and skirting boards
- Sanitaryware, taps and tile grout free of cement haze
- Streak-free, dust-free floors right into the corners
