Wall preparation
Before painting: checking the filled wall
Between filling and painting there is a short window that is often overlooked: this is when irregularities can still be corrected with little effort. After painting, any correction becomes much more work.
Why now
A sanded filled surface is evenly white and matt; small dents, ridges or burrs hardly show on it yet. It is the paint that makes them visible.
That is why the prepared wall is checked carefully before priming. Here a work light held flat against the wall is a genuinely useful tool: whatever it shows now can be fixed with a quick extra pass of filler.
What matters
The check covers the surface itself, the edges and the transitions to windows, doors and ceiling. The wall must also be free of dust before the primer goes on, or the paint will not hold as well.
- No ridges or burrs from filling
- Filled holes flush, not sunken
- Straight, clean edges and corners
- Sanding dust completely removed
Approval for painting
If the wall is fine, primer and paint follow. If you want to be present for this intermediate step, arrange it in advance; with smooth walls at Q3 or Q4 it makes sense.
Only the preparation is assessed here. How the finished wall looks only becomes clear after the last coat, in normal light.
