Covering up before painting: keep everything clean
Careful covering decides whether only the wall looks new after painting, or whether paint splashes are left on the parquet and windowsill too. The time needed for preparation depends on the furnishings, surfaces and access and should be built into the schedule.
What gets covered
Everything that stays in the room and must not get paint on it is protected: floors, furniture, windowsills, radiators, door frames and light switches. Small furniture and decorations are best removed from the room beforehand; large pieces are moved to the middle and wrapped completely.
Sockets and light switches are carefully protected from paint. Covers should not be removed without the relevant expertise. Careful taping protects the visible parts and makes it easier to paint evenly along the edges.
Which materials work best
On the floor, tear-resistant protective fleece is better than thin plastic sheeting: it absorbs paint drips and is less slippery. Its edges are fixed so that it does not shift. Plastic sheeting is fine for furniture and for surfaces that only need protecting briefly.
Masking tape goes along the edges to the ceiling, window and skirting board. For freshly painted or delicate surfaces there is low-tack tape that does not pull paint off when it is removed.

After painting
Tape is removed before the paint has fully cured, slowly and at a low angle. That keeps the edge clean and stops the paint from cracking off.
Fleece and sheeting only come up once all work in the room is finished. Afterwards, protective material and work residues are removed. When the room can be used again depends on the products used, drying and ventilation.
