New paintwork: how to judge the result fairly

By TF Clean 2 min read

After painting, a calm walk-through is worth it. If you know what to look for, you can quickly see whether the work is clean and tell real defects apart from normal features of a freshly painted wall.

Looking at it the right way

A wall is judged the way you see it in everyday life: from a normal distance and in normal lighting. With a torch held flat against the wall, almost any surface shows small irregularities; that is not the standard for paint in a living space.

Drying matters too. Fresh emulsion paint often looks patchy until it is completely dry. A final look the next day is therefore worthwhile.

What matters

Good paintwork covers evenly, without lap marks or streaks. Edges at the ceiling, windows and skirting are straight, and sockets, floors and furniture are free of paint.

  • Even coverage with no old colour showing through
  • No roller marks or streaks in normal light
  • Straight colour edges at ceiling, windows and skirting
  • Clean floors, switches and windowsills

If something needs touching up

If you notice a spot, it is best to point it out at the wall or mark it with a small piece of tape. That way everyone knows straight away what it is about.

After a touch-up, the wall is repainted up to the next corner or edge if necessary, not just in one spot. Otherwise a dab of paint can show up as a patch against the light, even if it is the same colour.
