Painting
Painting a ceiling: order, stains and streaks
The ceiling is a large continuous surface. Streaks and lap marks can be especially noticeable there when light falls from the side. With the right order and preparation, it turns out even.
Ceiling first, then walls
Painting works from top to bottom. Drips and splashes from the ceiling then land on walls that are going to be painted anyway. Doing the walls first often means touching them up afterwards.
Before painting, light fittings are removed or carefully wrapped, smoke detectors are covered and furniture is taken out or protected in the middle of the room.
Treating stains properly
Water marks, nicotine or soot bleed through normal emulsion again and again, even after several coats. These areas get a stain-blocking primer first.
If the old paint rubs off as powder when you wipe it, the ceiling needs a primer. Otherwise the new coat will not hold well and may peel later.
- Water stains and nicotine: stain-blocking primer
- Chalky old paint: clean and apply a suitable primer
- Cracks and holes: fill and sand first
A finish without streaks
The paint is applied quickly, wet on wet, so that no visible lap marks form. The last roller pass runs towards the light coming from the window, which makes roller marks hard to see.
A ceiling is painted in one go, without a long break in the middle. In large rooms two people often work at the same time.
