Planning a feature wall: wall, colour, clean edge
A single coloured wall transforms a room with little effort. To make it look intentional rather than accidental, three things matter: the right wall, a clean colour edge and a shade that suits the light in the room.
Which wall works best
A feature wall works best where the eye falls anyway: behind the sofa, behind the bed or by the dining table. A wall with lots of doors, windows or radiators is less suitable, because the colour is constantly interrupted.
Dark shades make a wall appear closer. In a long, narrow room that can be useful: a dark end wall makes it feel shorter and cosier.
A clean colour edge
The simplest and calmest boundary is an inside corner. Outside corners are vulnerable, because knocks show immediately. At the ceiling there are two options: the colour goes all the way up, or it stops with a narrow white strip above it.
For a really sharp edge, the line is taped and the tape edge is first painted with the existing wall colour. If anything bleeds under the tape, it is the right colour. Only then does the feature colour go on.
Colour and effect
Across a whole wall, a shade looks stronger than on a small colour card. A test patch on a large sheet, viewed in daylight and in the evening, prevents surprises.
Strong and dark colours often need two or more coats to look even. That should be allowed for in time and materials from the start.
