Deep cleaning a bathroom: limescale, grout, taps
A bathroom quickly looks clean when the mirror and sink shine. The clean is only truly thorough once the limescale on the shower screen and the deposits in the grout have been removed and the areas behind the toilet have been cleaned too.
The right order
Cleaning goes from top to bottom and from clean to dirty: mirrors, shelves and tiles first, then the sink and shower or bath, the toilet last and the floor at the very end.
Professionals use colour-coded cloths so that germs do not travel from the toilet to the sink. The toilet area has its own cloths that are not used anywhere else.
Limescale and grout
Limescale on shower screens, taps and shower heads dissolves with an acidic cleaner that needs time to work and is then rinsed off thoroughly. Stubborn deposits often need two rounds.
Dirty tile grout is treated with a suitable brush and a cleaner that is compatible with the material. Whether it becomes lighter again depends on the type and depth of the discolouration. Black spots in silicone joints, on the other hand, are usually mould deep in the material. Cleaning lightens them; a lasting fix often means replacing the joint.
Protecting materials
Natural stone such as marble cannot take acid, and that includes limescale remover. High-gloss taps are cleaned only with soft cloths, as scouring products leave fine scratches.
