Deep cleaning the kitchen and bathroom: tackling grease, limescale and grout

By TF Clean 4 min read

The kitchen and bathroom set the benchmark at every end-of-tenancy handover, before moving into a new home and during a thorough spring clean. In the kitchen the main challenge is sticky cooking grease and baked-on residue; in the bathroom it is limescale, soap scum and damp grout lines. With matched degreasers and descalers and a clear sequence, a deep clean is straightforward to plan.

Safety first: never mix acidic and chlorine cleaners

When cleaning bathrooms and kitchens, never combine chlorine-based mould or bleach cleaners with acidic products such as limescale removers, vinegar, citric acid or acidic toilet cleaners. The chemical reaction releases toxic chlorine gas. Use different products only separately after rinsing thoroughly with clean water, ventilate well and wear protective gloves.

Check surface compatibility before starting: a cleaner that works safely on glazed ceramic tiles can permanently etch calcareous natural stone (marble, travertine, limestone), aluminium grease filters, high-gloss cabinet fronts or matt-black coated taps.

  • Never use chlorine bleach and acidic descalers together
  • Keep rooms well ventilated and wear protective gloves
  • Follow care guidelines for cabinet fronts, natural stone and taps
  • Patch-test strong degreasers or descalers on an inconspicuous area first

Kitchen deep clean: degreasing cooker hood, cupboards and oven

Always start at the very top in the kitchen: on top of wall cupboards and around the cooker hood (extractor fan), where a sticky layer of cooking vapour and dust settles. Metal grease filters can be soaked in hot water with an alkaline degreaser or washing-up liquid; activated carbon filters in recirculating hoods are replaced rather than washed.

Cabinet fronts, handles, tiled splashbacks and the insides of kitchen cupboards are wiped down with warm water and a surface-safe degreaser – allowing dwell time instead of scrubbing hard. For oven cleaning, dedicated oven cleaners dissolve baked-on grease on trays, racks and the inner glass door without scratching the enamel with steel wool. Empty and defrost the fridge and freezer, then wipe the interior, drainage channel and door seals hygienically.

Bathroom and WC: dissolving limescale while protecting taps and grout

Limescale on wall tiles, glass shower screens, shower heads and washbasins dissolves with acidic sanitary cleaners (e.g. based on citric or sulfamic acid). Always pre-wet cement tile grout with clean water before applying acidic cleaner so the acid does not erode the mortar, then rinse thoroughly afterwards. Never use acidic descalers on marble, travertine or limestone.

In the toilet bowl, matched sanitary cleaners remove limescale and urinary scale under the rim. Cement grout in the shower can be scrubbed free of soap scum and body oils using a grout brush and alkaline bathroom cleaner; deep-seated black mould inside flexible silicone joints usually cannot be cleaned out completely and requires re-sealing. Finally, buff chrome taps, mirrors and shower glass dry with a lint-free microfibre cloth.

A systematic top-to-bottom sequence and colour-coded cloths

Work strictly from top to bottom and from dry to wet in both rooms: first dust extractor vents, light fittings and cupboard tops, then clean wall tiles, fitted units, appliances and sanitaryware, and finally mop the floors and skirting boards.

In professional flat cleaning, strictly separated colour-coded cloths are used (e.g. red for WC/urinal, yellow for basins/shower/tiles, blue for furniture/fittings, green for the kitchen) to prevent cross-contamination. A final check in daylight quickly reveals any streaks on stainless steel, mirrors and high-gloss fronts.
