Cleaning a balcony: floor, railings and glass

By TF Clean 2 min read

After winter, a balcony is often full of leaves, green algae and dust from the street. A thorough clean makes it usable again. What matters is the floor surface and where the dirty water ends up.

The floor

Tiles and concrete are swept, soaked and cleaned with a brush or scrubber; green algae in the joints often needs a special cleaner. Wooden and composite decking is brushed along the grain.

Pressure washers are risky on wood, older joints and waterproofing: too strong a jet roughens wood and can wash out joint material. A brush and water is often the gentler choice.

Railings, glass and furniture

Metal railings and glass panels are freed of dust and water marks, with the glass squeegeed streak-free at the end. The balcony door with its frame and threshold is included too.

Pigeon droppings are moistened before removal and never swept dry, so that no dust is stirred up. For larger amounts, the cleaning method and protective equipment should be determined by a specialist firm.

  • Railing or glass panels
  • Balcony door, frame and threshold
  • Outdoor furniture and outside of planters

Drain and neighbours

Before wet cleaning, the drain is cleared so that water runs away instead of pooling. Leaves in the drain are a common cause of damp damage.

In blocks of flats, no dirty water should drip onto the balcony below. That is why little water is used and the cleaning works towards the drain.
