Flat cleaning
Deep cleaning vs. maintenance cleaning: what is the difference?
Anyone requesting a quote from a cleaning company for a flat, house or office quickly encounters two industry terms: deep cleaning (Grundreinigung) and regular maintenance cleaning (Unterhaltsreinigung). The two complement each other, but differ clearly in depth, time required and purpose.
Deep cleaning (intensive clean): removing stubborn build-up
A deep clean removes stubborn deposits that have built up over months or years: grease films on kitchen cupboards and extractor hoods, limescale in bathrooms, greying in tile grout and on vinyl floors, and dust inside radiators, door rebates and window frames.
It is usually booked for specific occasions — such as a move-in or move-out clean between tenancies, a spring clean, or right before starting a regular cleaning schedule.
Maintenance cleaning: ongoing cleanliness at fixed intervals
Maintenance cleaning is recurring care carried out to a fixed cleaning schedule (service specification) — for example weekly, twice weekly or fortnightly in homes, offices, law firms and medical practices.
It maintains hygiene standards across floors, work surfaces, touchpoints, kitchenettes and washrooms, but is not designed to strip away years of heavy build-up in a single routine slot.
The most cost-effective combination in practice
The most efficient approach is starting with a one-off deep clean followed by regular maintenance cleaning. Once limescale, grease and floors have been thoroughly restored, every subsequent visit takes noticeably less time.
- Deep clean: one-off intensive clean for move-in, move-out or heavy build-up
- Maintenance cleaning: regular care following a fixed weekly or monthly plan
- Combined approach: initial deep clean followed by ongoing maintenance cleaning
