Clearance
Clearing a cellar: getting the space back
A full cellar often only becomes an issue when a move or handover is coming up. Then things have to happen fast. Good preparation also makes it easier to clear a storage room that has not been used for a long time. How long it takes depends on the volume and access.
Clarify beforehand
In blocks of flats, each household has its own storage room, while corridors and drying rooms belong to everyone. Only what clearly belongs to you is cleared. Abandoned items in shared areas are a matter for the property management.
Keys for the front door, cellar door and storage room are important, as is the route outside: how many steps, how narrow the stairs are and where the vehicle can stop.
Typical cellar finds
Boxes that have stood on the floor for a long time are often damp or mouldy. They are disposed of without repacking. Old washing machines, fridges and electrical waste do not go in bulky waste but to the take-back scheme for old appliances.
Preserves, paint tins and cleaning products are handled separately. Sentimental items, photos and documents should be taken out beforehand.
- Damp boxes and textiles
- Electrical appliances and fridges
- Leftover paint, varnish and chemicals
- Furniture, shelving and wood
After the clearance
At the end the storage room is empty and swept clean. If there are signs of mould on the walls or floor, it is worth looking at the cause: otherwise the next box stored there will have the same problem.
If the room should be cleaned or the walls painted afterwards, this can be planned together with the clearance.
