Clearing an attic: hatch, ladder, removal

By TF Clean 2 min read

Over the years, everything that has no other place ends up in the attic. When clearing it, the biggest problem is not the amount but the way down: loft hatches, folding ladders and narrow stairwells decide how the work can be done.

Access is decisive

Many attics can only be reached by a folding ladder through a narrow hatch. Anything that does not fit through the opening has to be dismantled upstairs. Large wardrobes that went up decades ago, before the loft was converted, often only come down in pieces today.

Then there is the route through the house: stairwell, hallway and front door. For planning, photos of the hatch and ladder are therefore just as important as photos of the contents.

What is special under the roof

In summer it gets very hot under the roof, so attic clearances are often done early in the day. Without a proper floor, only load-bearing joists or boards may be walked on, never the insulation.

Old cardboard boxes have often been affected by damp or mice. They are not torn open but carried down carefully in one piece.

Sorting and disposal

Before the clearance, it is agreed what stays. Keepsakes, documents and valuables are moved to a safe place in the flat first.

The rest is separated: wood, metal, electrical appliances and general waste. Old paints, varnishes and chemicals belong to hazardous waste collection, not bulky waste.

  • Photograph the hatch, ladder and route through the house
  • Mark items that stay beforehand
  • Dispose of electrical appliances and hazardous waste separately
