Flat cleaning
Cleaning inside kitchen cupboards: grease, crumbs
From the outside, kitchen cupboards often look well kept. Inside, crumbs and flour dust build up over the years, and in the wall cupboards above the hob, a sticky film of grease. Before moving in or out, a thorough clean inside is worth it.
Where the dirt collects
The cupboards next to and above the hob are affected most: cooking vapour settles there as a film of grease, inside too. Base cupboards tend to have crumbs, stains from leaking bottles and dust in the corners.
Often overlooked are drawer runners, handle recesses and the top of the wall cupboards, which you cannot see from below.
Cleaning properly
The cupboards are emptied completely and the shelves are taken out and cleaned individually. Grease comes off with a mild degreaser or warm water with washing-up liquid.
Most kitchen units are made of coated chipboard. Its edges swell when water gets in. That is why surfaces are wiped with a barely damp cloth and dried straight away.

- Drawers including runners
- Door interiors, hinges and handles
- Top of the wall cupboards
- Plinths and the cupboard under the sink
Putting things back
All surfaces should be dry before anything goes back in, so that no odours form. Leave the cupboards open until everything is completely dry.
In an occupied flat it is practical to clean the kitchen in sections. That way part of it is always usable and not everything has to be cleared out at once.
