Cleaning a fridge properly: step by step

By TF Clean 2 min read

In everyday life a fridge is rarely cleaned thoroughly. When moving out, after a power cut or when it smells unpleasant, a complete clean is worth it, including a few steps that are often forgotten.

Preparation

For a thorough clean, the fridge is switched off and emptied. Food is kept in a cool bag or a cool room in the meantime.

If the freezer compartment has a layer of ice, it is defrosted first. Ice is never chipped off with sharp tools, as that can damage the cooling pipes.

Cleaning thoroughly

Glass shelves, drawers and door compartments are removed and washed in warm water with washing-up liquid. The interior is wiped with a mild cleaner approved by the manufacturer. The door seals are cleaned according to the care instructions.

Two spots are often overlooked: the defrost drain hole in the back wall, where dirt and smells collect, and the door seals with their folds.

  • Glass shelves, salad drawers and door compartments
  • Back wall with drain channel and drain hole
  • Door seals including the folds
  • Outside and handle

Switching it back on

After cleaning, everything is dried well so that no new ice or odour forms. Then the appliance is switched on and only refilled once it is cold again.

If the empty fridge stays switched off after cleaning, for example at an end-of-tenancy clean, the door should be left slightly open. That prevents a musty smell.
