Clearing a storeroom while the business runs

By TF Clean 2 min read

A storeroom is often cleared when a move, conversion or change of tenant is coming up. The business needs to keep running in the meantime. That works when it is clear who decides what goes and in what order the work is done.

Good planning is half the job

One person in the company approves what may be disposed of. Items whose future use is still unclear are collected separately; the responsible person decides on them later.

Work takes place outside peak times, for example early in the morning or after hours. The loading bay, lift and parking are reserved so that deliveries keep arriving.

Documents and data storage

Business records are subject to statutory retention periods. Before folders are thrown away, it should be clear which ones still have to be kept.

Files containing customer or staff data do not belong in paper recycling but in certified document destruction under DIN 66399. The same applies to old hard drives and other data storage media.

  • Approval by a responsible person
  • Collect items whose use is still unclear separately
  • Check retention periods
  • Destroy files and data media securely

Working in sections

Large storerooms are cleared zone by zone. After each section, it is clear where the remaining stock now stands, and the next area is released.

At the end the space is empty, shelving has been taken down or left as agreed, and the room is ready for cleaning, renovation or handover.
