Removing furniture: will it fit through the door?

By TF Clean 2 min read

When removing large furniture, the route matters as much as the weight. Narrow doors, landings and small lifts can make dismantling necessary. Measurements and photos help to prepare the removal.

Check routes and furniture dimensions

What matters is the narrowest point on the way out. Often that is not the front door but a bend in the stairwell, a banister or the lift car.

A sofa that just fits through the door often will not get round a tight corner. Photos of the whole route show more than individual measurements.

  • Width and height of doors
  • Bends and landings in the stairwell
  • Inside dimensions of the lift
  • Route from the entrance to the vehicle

Dismantle or in one piece

Wall units, beds and kitchens are usually dismantled. Furniture that is being disposed of can be taken apart roughly; that is quick and saves space in the vehicle.

Furniture that will be used again is dismantled carefully. Screws and fittings go into a labelled bag that stays with the piece.

Keep or dispose of

Before the appointment it should be clear where each piece goes: to the tip, to a new flat, to relatives. Coloured stickers on the furniture prevent mix-ups.

Well-kept furniture can sometimes still be sold or given away. This is mainly worthwhile for solid wood and branded furniture, but it needs some lead time.
