Bulky waste in Riesa: collection, recycling centre or clearance?

By TF Clean 4 min read

An old sofa, a wardrobe from the cellar or a broken fridge: in Riesa and the Meissen district there are three ways to dispose of bulky waste (Sperrmüll) and old electrical appliances properly – booking a kerbside collection through the municipal waste authority ZAOE, taking items to a recycling centre yourself, or hiring a clearance company. Which option makes sense depends on volume in cubic metres, time pressure and the type of waste. Here is an overview of the ZAOE rules (as of October 2026; always check zaoe.de for current details).

ZAOE bulky waste collection: up to 3 m³ free twice a year

Riesa belongs to the Upper Elbe Valley Waste Management Association (Zweckverband Abfallwirtschaft Oberes Elbtal – ZAOE). Every private household on a connected property can register up to three cubic metres (3 m³) of bulky waste and waste electrical appliances for free collection twice a year. According to ZAOE, collections in the Riesa-Großenhain area are carried out by REMONDIS Elbe-Röder GmbH.

Standard collection takes place from the kerbside in front of the property. Anyone unable to carry heavy furniture out of the flat or cellar themselves can book a paid carry-out service through ZAOE (billed per started 15 minutes).

How to register bulky waste in Riesa online or by post

You can book using the online form at zaoe.de or the stamped order card from the annual waste calendar. Important: list every single piece of furniture, carpet and appliance in full – the collection crew will only take items that were registered in advance.

Collection takes place within four weeks of receiving your registration, and the exact date is confirmed at least one week beforehand by email or postcard. Questions about collection dates can be clarified directly with the contractor on 03524 883 647 (per ZAOE).

Putting bulky waste and electrical appliances out correctly

To make sure nothing is left behind on collection day, clear limits on size, weight and separation apply. Any uncollected items must be taken back onto your property:

  • Place items out no earlier than the evening before and no later than 6:00 am on collection day
  • Position clearly visible outside the property where wheelie bins are emptied, keeping pavements and the road clear
  • Dismantle large wardrobes and beds into portable sections: maximum 70 kg weight and 1.5 m³ per piece
  • Place electrical appliances (fridges, washing machines, cookers) separately from furniture, as a separate vehicle collects them; remove batteries and bulbs beforehand
  • Small electrical appliances are only collected at the kerbside together with large appliances

What is excluded from bulky waste: building rubble, fixtures and paint

Bulky waste covers movable household furnishings that do not fit into the general waste bin even when dismantled. Loose small items in bags or boxes, general household rubbish, paper, glass and packaging are not taken during bulky waste collection.

Also excluded are fixed building components and renovation waste such as interior doors, windows, laminate flooring, ceiling panels, sanitaryware (sinks, toilets), rubble, leftover wallpaper, hazardous waste (wall paint, varnishes, solvents), car parts, tyres and garden waste. During a flat clearance or renovation, these materials frequently arise alongside furniture and require separate disposal.

Self-delivery to a recycling centre in the Meissen district

ZAOE does not operate a recycling centre (Wertstoffhof) within the town of Riesa itself, but Riesa residents can use any ZAOE centre in the association area. The nearest sites in the Meissen district are Groptitz (Altweidaer Straße 2, 01594 Stauchitz) and Großenhain (Zum Fliegerhorst 9; check zaoe.de beforehand for opening hours and ongoing modernisation work).

With a completed and signed bulky waste drop-off form from zaoe.de, you can also deliver up to three cubic metres free of charge twice a year at the recycling centre – ideal if you have a van or trailer and cannot wait up to four weeks for kerbside collection.

When a full clearance by TF Clean makes more sense

For a couple of bulky items without time pressure, ZAOE collection is the most economical route. A professional clearance service pays off whenever a move, household clearance or cellar clearance involves well over three cubic metres, a tight flat handover date does not allow a four-week wait, fitted kitchens and wardrobes need dismantling, or household contents and renovation waste have to be cleared alongside furniture.

In Riesa and the surrounding area, TF Clean handles all carrying from any floor, dismantling, waste sorting and licensed disposal right through to a broom-clean handover. Send us a few photos – we will tell you honestly whether municipal bulky waste collection is enough or provide a clear quote for a full clearance.
