Renovating while living there: room by room

By TF Clean 2 min read

Not everyone can move out for a renovation. With good planning in stages, a flat can be renovated while you live in it. The key is that enough rooms always remain usable.

Room by room

The work is done in stages: one room is cleared, renovated, cleaned and furnished again, then the next one follows. Meanwhile, the furniture from that room is kept in another room.

The bathroom and kitchen are best done in short, firmly scheduled phases, as they are needed every day. For the bedroom, it is agreed in advance when it can be used again after drying and sufficient ventilation. If necessary, plan somewhere else to sleep.

Dust and tidiness

Dust barriers or zip doors separate the work area. Walkways through the flat are covered with fleece so that no dust or paint is carried into other rooms.

At the end of each working day, the area is tidied and roughly cleaned. That keeps the flat liveable even during the renovation.

  • Dust protection between work area and living space
  • Covered walkways
  • Daily tidying
  • Fixed working hours

Good planning, less stress

Before starting, the order of the rooms is set, along with where furniture is stored in the meantime and when each room will be free again.

For households with small children or pets and for anyone working from home, a fixed schedule is especially important. It shows which days will be noisy and when a room can be used again.
