Renovation materials: who buys what?

By TF Clean 2 min read

Paint, wallpaper, filler and protective material must be there at the right time and in the right quantity. Before starting, it should therefore be clear who buys what and where it stays until it is used.

Buy yourself or through the firm?

Many customers choose the wallpaper and colour themselves, while the contractor sources the materials. That has advantages: quantity and quality match the job, and if something is missing, the firm takes care of it.

If you buy yourself, agree on the product and quantity first. Compare the hiding power and spreading rate of the paint you have in mind. These figures help to estimate the material needed and the work involved.

Watch the batch number

Wallpaper rolls from different production runs can differ slightly in shade. Each roll carries a batch number; for one wall, all rolls should have the same one.

The same goes for tinted wall paint: for one room it is best to mix the whole quantity at once. A second mix can differ minimally, which shows on a continuous wall.

  • Wallpaper: same batch number per wall
  • Paint: mix the amount for one room at once
  • Allow a little extra for touch-ups

Storing until use

Paint and filler are stored frost-free, wallpaper rolls flat and dry. Ideally they go in a room of the flat that is not being renovated straight away.

Packaging, leftovers and empty tins come with every renovation. Who takes them away at the end should be settled in advance.
