Sign-off after a renovation: how it works
A renovation ends with the sign-off: a joint walk-through in which the result is checked and confirmed. Well prepared, it does not take long and gives both sides clarity.
The joint walk-through
During the joint walk-through, the rooms are checked against the quote or room list, ideally in daylight. The basis is the agreed work and the agreed quality of finish.
Walls and ceilings are viewed from a normal distance. Edges, joints at windows and doors, sockets and floors are included, as is how clean everything is after the work.
The snag list
If defects or unfinished work are found during the walk-through, such as a spot that needs repainting, a silicone joint or a missing socket frame, they go on a snag list with the room, the exact spot and a date for completion.
New wishes that only arise during the walk-through, such as another wall in a different colour, are not snags but an additional job. Keeping these apart prevents misunderstandings.
- Room and exact spot
- What needs doing
- When it will be done
- Note new wishes separately
After the sign-off
Once the open points are done, the affected spots are checked together again. Whether other areas should be inspected depends on the type and extent of the touch-ups.
Keep the quote, the snag list and details of the paints and wallpapers used together. This information makes later touch-ups easier.
