Cleaning skirting boards: the underrated detail

By TF Clean 2 min read

Skirting boards are only noticed when they are dirty. But then they really stand out: a grey line of dust along the floor makes even a freshly mopped room look neglected. At flat handovers they are a typical inspection point.

Why they get dirty so quickly

Dust settles on the top edge of the board, while mop water, shoe scuffs and vacuum cleaner marks end up on the front. In hallways and kitchens this happens especially fast.

If only the floor is mopped, dirt is often pushed straight against the board. That is why skirting boards belong in every deep clean and final clean.

Cleaning properly

First, loose dust is removed with a brush attachment or a dry cloth, then the boards are wiped damp. Wooden boards are cleaned with a barely damp cloth and dried straight away.

Plastic boards can take a little more water. Shoe scuffs usually come off with a melamine sponge, though only with light pressure on painted surfaces.

  • Remove dust from the top edge
  • Wipe the front damp
  • Corners and joints at door frames
  • Treat scuff marks individually

Behind the furniture

Behind wardrobes, sofas and beds there are often sections that have not been reached for years. In an empty room during a move-out or move-in clean they are easiest to do.

Loose or damaged boards become obvious in the process. They are not simply cleaned along with the rest but discussed separately, since a repair may be needed.
