Wallpapering one wall: creating a deliberate accent
A single wallpapered wall, with a pattern, texture or photo mural, sets a strong accent in a room. For it to look like a deliberate design element, the choice of wall and clean transitions are what matter.
The right wall
A continuous wall without windows and with few interruptions works well: behind the bed, behind the sofa or by the dining table. The wallpaper then acts like a picture the eye is drawn to anyway.
A wall with windows, doors and radiators chops up the pattern and makes the job more complex without improving the effect.
Clean transitions
The transition to the neighbouring painted wall is best placed in the inside corner. The wallpaper is cut exactly at the corner, so no length runs round it.
At the ceiling and skirting board, the lengths are cut with a straight edge and a sharp blade. A slightly wavy ceiling is more noticeable with patterned wallpaper; a narrow painted strip as a gap often helps here.
Well prepared
The wall must be smooth, firm and even, especially for thin wallpapers and photo murals. Old plug holes and cracks are filled first, or they will show through.
If the other walls are being painted at the same time, the paint goes on first and the wallpaper after. That way no paint splashes land on the new wallpaper.
- Choose a wall with few interruptions
- Transition in the inside corner
- Fill the surface smooth
- Paint first, then wallpaper
