Wallpapering
Wallpapering a furnished room
A room does not have to be empty for new wallpaper. What matters is that every wall is freely accessible and furniture is protected. With a little preparation, even a lived-in room can be repapered in a short time.
Making space
Furniture is moved to the middle of the room and covered, and pictures, shelves and curtain rails are taken down. Wallpapering needs about a metre of space in front of each wall, a little more for the pasting table.
Large built-in wardrobes or fixed kitchens often stay in place. The wallpaper then ends neatly at their edge, and the wall behind stays as it is.
- Move furniture to the middle and cover it
- Take down pictures, shelves and curtains
- Allow space for the pasting table
- Agree which built-ins stay in place
Safety at sockets
Wallpapering involves wet paste, including around sockets and switches. That is why the circuit for the room is switched off before the covers are unscrewed.
Work on sockets and switches belongs in expert hands. Agree before starting how these areas will be protected and how the wallpaper will be finished neatly around them. Covers and electrical parts must not be contaminated with wet paste.
After the work
Furniture should only go back against the wall once the wallpaper is completely dry. How long that takes depends on the material, substrate and room climate. Otherwise damp wallpaper can get pressure marks or come loose at the seams.
Protective sheeting and fleece are removed at the end, and leftovers and offcuts are taken away. The room is then ready to be furnished again.
