Painting
Painting a room while you keep living there
Not every renovation needs an empty flat. A single room can easily be painted while the rest of the home is used as normal. With a little preparation, daily life is hardly disturbed.
Preparing the room
Clear small items, pictures, books and decorations beforehand, ideally into a room you will not urgently need for the next few days. Large furniture can often stay in the room: it is moved to the middle and covered.
Free access to all walls saves time. About a metre of space from the wall is enough for a ladder and roller.
During the work
Modern emulsion paints are water-based and have very little odour. Low-emission products, for example those with the Blue Angel label, are particularly suitable for occupied homes.
The door to the room stays closed where possible, and the window is tilted or opened wide regularly for airing. Children and pets are best kept in other rooms during this time.
When the room can be used again
Emulsion paint is usually touch-dry within a few hours, but only fully hard after a few days. When a freshly painted room can be used as a bedroom again depends on the products used and on drying and ventilation conditions. Check the manufacturer’s information.
Wardrobes and sofas should stay a few centimetres away from the wall for the first few days. Otherwise the fresh paint can stick to the furniture.
