Painting
Storing leftover paint so touch-ups work later
A scratch in the hallway, a hole after moving a picture: with the right leftover paint, it is fixed in minutes. The condition is that a year later you still know which tin belongs to which wall.
Labelling properly
Stick a label on each tin with the room, the wall and the date it was painted. Keep the original label with the product name and colour code readable; with tinted paint the mixing formula is particularly important.
Never combine different leftovers, even if they look the same. Even small differences in shade will show on the wall later.

Storing properly
Emulsion paint cannot withstand frost. Store tins somewhere cool, dry and frost-free, such as a cellar, not in the garage or on the balcony.
The lid must be clean and close tightly; dried paint on the rim lets air in. Small amounts keep longer in a smaller, well-sealed container.
Touching up and disposal
Even with the same paint, a touch-up can remain slightly visible, because fresh paint has a different sheen from an older coat. For larger areas it is better to paint up to the next corner.
In many areas, dried-out emulsion paint can go in general waste, while liquid leftovers and varnishes belong to hazardous waste collection. Your local waste authority’s rules apply.
