Planning a renovation: the room list as a basis

By TF Clean 2 min read

“Paint the whole flat” sounds clear but leaves many questions open: ceilings too? Doors? The storage room? A simple room list answers them before the first quote is written.

Why a list is worth it

With a room list, every firm gets the same basis. That makes quotes comparable, and it is immediately obvious if something is missing from one of them.

The same list helps at the sign-off too: room by room, what was agreed is checked.

What goes on the list

For each room, the surfaces are noted individually along with the desired result: repair, paint, wallpaper or leave as is. A few photos per room complete the list.

Often forgotten are surfaces you hardly notice day to day but that take time during a renovation.

  • Ceilings, not just walls
  • Window reveals and alcoves
  • Doors, frames and radiators
  • Hallway, storage room and stairwell
  • Bathroom and kitchen with tiled areas

Marking open decisions

Not everything has to be decided at the start. If the colour is not fixed yet or it is unclear whether a room will be wallpapered, mark it. The quote can then include options.

If more work is added later, it is entered in the same list. That keeps it clear what was originally agreed and what has been added.
